Why there aren't any Billboards In Hawaii?

While driving through the streets of Hawaii, you might notice something odd, specially if you come from a large city and are only accustomed to the sights offered by the concrete jungle.

Imagine the following scenario.

You get in a car and start driving through the streets of Hawaii. You turn on the radio to listen to some music; the weather is absolutely wonderful and you are eager to do some serious sightseeing to clear your head.

You drive beyond the city outskirts through an incredible Hawaiian scenic route... Look! There's that beautiful volcano... Suddenly, a huge billboard is blocking your view. Oh there it is... isn't that volcano gorgeous? Sure does look pretty.. but hold on, there's a huge “Buy Viagra Online” billboard blocking your view again. Yes, the billboard will focus your attention on how good your sex life could become should you take the ED medication.... But, where did the volcano go?

How would you like to have one of those billboards get on the way of a Hawaiian sunset, or in front of an awesome waterfall? Hawaiians know better. They know that their natural resources are the main selling point in the islands. It is nature what attracts tourism, and blocking the views with a billboard is counter productive, as far as they are concerned. Billboards only cheapen the environment and pollute the Hawaiian landscape.

Building codes that ban that type of advertising have been established in Hawaii to preserve the views of the mountains, volcanoes and beaches of the islands. Fortunately, similar strategies are being adopted in many important tourist locations around the world, enhancing the beauty of those locations. Hawaii has set a wise example for tourism destinations to follow.
